Every March 21 theWorld Down Syndrome Day. Trisomy 21 is the number that has been made to coincide with the commemoration of World Down Syndrome Day. The number 3 is equivalent to the month of March, while 21 is the day chosen to remember the genetic alteration that causes the most common chromosomal disorder of all, Down syndrome.

It seems that on this extra chromosome, those affected by Down syndrome keep the characteristics of their physical and cognitive traits and, at the same time, it gives them the gift of smiling, innocence and sensitivity. However, fewer and fewer are among us. While in the past, children with Down syndrome were the young children of women who had given birth when they were over 40 years old, now they are the children of women who have decided to continue their pregnancy despite regrets.

And it is that advanced maternal age is one of the reasons that increase the incidence of Down syndrome. Of every 750 conceptions worldwide, one suffers from trisomy 21, that is, one more chromosome in the 22 pairs of chromosomes that form a new being and that produces a disability, known as Down syndrome. This chromosomal disorder is universal and does not distinguish races, cultures, or social classes. It produces characteristic physical features, slow brain development and is associated with heart disease and other health problems.

The reason for this decrease worldwide is due to the great advances in prenatal diagnosis, which have allowed the genetic information of the baby to be known by the amniocentesis test at week 20. This, together with the abortion laws, which in most countries allow the termination of pregnancy for medical reasons, when the fetus comes with malformations, up to the 22nd week of gestation, have been able to vary the statistics. Science and the change in social sensitivity have led to 30 percent fewer children being born with chromosome 21 syndrome today.

However, the social participation of people with Down syndrome is increasing thanks to the insertion programs of numerous foundations. Education models for children with Down syndrome are increasingly effective and are focused on learning adapted to their needs. Thus, in the future, it is intended to build an egalitarian and balanced society through an inclusive education model for children with Down syndrome, which allows them to attend school and be an active part of society from an early age. Thus, they will be able to show that for each one there is a long way to go, but that with desire and effort, anything is possible.
